Public School Indeed
My friend Ed posted this afternoon about his experiences with the public education system in Los Angeles, and it has really gotten my gears grinding. Not just because my own experiences echo his, but because he expressed nervousness at coming off as classist, which couldn’t be further from the truth.  In fifth grade, my family moved from Budapest, Hungary to Los Angeles. I already spoke...

Healthcare Will Be the Death of Me
This is something I haven’t talked about much, even though it’s taken up over 20 months of my life at this point. I guess I’ve just been hanging in this limbo space of being sick, and without any solution on the horizon, it seemed like pointless complaining to talk much about it (except with close friends, of course — a girl needs to vent). Last week I finally got a...

LOLZ fancy entourage What’s Downton Abbey? Basically it’s about a bunch of honkeys that live in a church— or maybe it’s a museum. Either way, they don’t got wifi.

I Lost My Voice and My Grandfather
My voice came back. My grandfather did too, for a few hours. His tired, 93 year old heart started beating again when the paramedics asked it to, which is, in itself, stunning. He didn’t really come back, though. His body did, but I’m not sure he was in there at all, anymore. I went by Thursday night on my way home. I had stopped by earlier, but ran out to pick up some things and told him I’d be...

Fun with Disney: Cinderella
Because watching a movie is no fun unless you share your every thought with the internet. Remember when movies used to have credits at the beginning with intro music and other such fancy dealings? We’re such cinematic peasants now. My head is hung in shame. We all know this story. Literally, there’s some version of it in almost every culture around the world. Rich girl is orphaned and...

Happy Sunday
Say what you want about growing up in Eastern Europe in the 80s, at least we had this: <br> It’s so sweet I’m beside myself with glee each time I watch it (and have been for almost three decades whaaat). Also, kind of a brilliant commentary on urbanization, no?

Existential Crisis via Katy Perry
No, I’m not being melodramatic. …Maybe a smidge. But pop music was just never my thing. I find it to be contrived, formulaic, and blatantly transparent in its attempt to please a large audience and make bank. Which isn’t to say I condemn it (well, sometimes I do), but I guess mainly I won’t think you’re some kind of heathen for being into it. Nevertheless, feel free...
